He ate another bite, shoving his face full of tart so that he didn’t have to answer her.

That was fine. She was pretty sure she was right.

It was the groceries that tipped her off. He had admitted that, as a vamp type of Para, he rarely ate, but he just so happened to receive a delivery that contained eggs, sugar, butter, flour? Heavy cream? Four different types of fruits? All baking staples that she might have been able to write off as regular kitchen supplies, but confectioner’s sugar? Bread flour? Gelatin sheets?

No. In his own way, Zach had been the first to offer her an olive branch. It was only fair she returned the favor by making the blood tart.

Sitting back down in the seat opposite of her angel, Donna pushed her empty plate away from her. Last night, while she was lying awake in an unfamiliar bed, torn between worrying about her father and wondering why her “host” acted as if they’d never met before blowing up at her the way he had, she realized that this was exactly what she’d spent the last twelve years of her life waiting for. Her one big regret in life—apart from getting so entangled with Noah—was the what-if’s she had when it came to the winged male who saved her life.

For so long, he’d been the hero who swept in, then disappeared.

Now he was stuck with her, and she was determined to make something of this time she had with him.

Up first? A blood tart that earned her rave reviews at La Boulangerie, and a conversation that pushed him to reveal his true colors.

If it was Noah, he would’ve lost his temper by now. Not Zach. He went back and forth with her, keeping his cool without ever going as cold as he had the day before.

He called himself a beast. Yesterday, she believed it. Even after watching him put on a show for her, she had to wonder.

But now?

Beasts didn’t arrange to have groceries delivered to his spooky stone manor. They didn’t take delicate bites off of her dessert as if trying to savor it. Or spill water all over themselves because they were pointedly trying not to stare with their striking silver eyes.

There was only one topic she could think to mention to bring out his beastly side. She waited until he was in between bites to bluntly ask, “So when are we going to talk about how we know each other?”

“Pardon?”

“Oh, come on. Don’t pretend. I know you remember me.”

The way his gaze immediately dropped to her forearm gave Donna her answer.

However, instead of causing him to turn on her again, it had the opposite effect. He set his spoon down on his plate and pushed away from the table. “Thank you for the tart.”

Frustration eked out in her tone as she said, “A beast with manners? How nice.”

“Yes, well. Let no one say that I don’t take care of my guests—”

“Prisoners.”

He bowed his head. “So you say.”

Her angel turned away from the table, but Donna wasn’t willing to let him go just yet.
